
Though she was the first born, and continues to carry the torch her parents sparked, she managed to do so outside the marches. In her lifetime, she gained recognition as an author and actress, as well as a notivational speaker as granted as her birthright King's mission to encourage personal growth and positive social change through her work as an actor, speaker and producer ultimately led to her founding Higher Ground Productions. She is co-creator of the book entitled Open My Eyes, Open My Soul, demonstrating her commitment to raise awareness and enhance understanding about the importance of diversity. King was honored with numerous presentations, awards and citations by organizations around the country and was named one of the Outstanding Young Woman of America. She was a member of the board of directors of Martin Luther King Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change, Inc. She may have stood behind her parents, but Yolanda King was never in their shadows. She had alight all her own, and it shined brightly. As we mourn her passing we should all celebrate her life. She was truly a gift to the betterment of society. Another King is laid to rest, but the King legacy continues to thrive.
